phrases

I found this amazing darker charcoal grey to use as a backdrop for some more felt banners. Unfortunately the fabric store has now run out (because it's awesome) so I will have to stalk them until it comes back.

It was fun to come up with little sayings, but then limit them to no more than six letters to fit the space. I've got a bunch of others and I'm keeping a little list so I just might have to make more of these.

( the felt letters were all hand cut and hand sewn. It was tedious tedious work, which means I totally loved it! Relaxing and satisfying and such good time to catch up on some of the new fall shows. win. )

alphabets

So last week I was cutting out some felt letters to make an something alphabet-y for my baby cousin, and, well, I liked cutting out the letter shapes. So I cut out more, and then I couldn't decide which color pallet I preferred, so I made a bunch of them. I even made a few with little phrases (more on that later) but first here is some detail of those pretty pretty letters.

at my desk last night

I'll be back to sharing the calender tomorrow but for today here's what was happening at my desk last night. I can never resist hot pink and mint together, so much so that this is what I pulled out of the trim box left over from other projects, a rainbow of felt getting cut up for something that might end up being pretty cute, and of course tea features prominently in my work space. It's essential to getting stuff done at night. Also some really good spaghetti with homemade sauce and meatballs.

New work: January

Since all I am doing is working on things that aren't quite finished yet and it's been all progress shots and pictures of my desk for weeks, I thought it would be fun to share some things that I've finished. Starting with this watercolor calendar. I actually had a completely different idea for a calendar for this year (or next as it were) that I spent so so many hours doing and then when I put it all together it just didn't look right. So I pulled out some watercolor paper and painted some leaves, these leaves actually. And then I thought about the calendars I liked best and what I was doodling these days and I decided to see if I could do twelve different plantish patterns over the next week. So in the spirit of dragging things out I'm going to share them here one month at a time, starting of course with January.

sneaking scissors

I take a lot of pictures of my desk. Not sure why but it does happen frequently, and it's where I am most often so it makes sense that it would feature in a lot of photographs. I noticed that in these ones from various points over the weekend my scissors seem to be in all but one of the images though I don't even recall using them all that much. I guess they were just determined to be part of the fun. I feel like, if they are going to be such a regular player I should maybe get some better looking ones, but then, while these may be a bit, lets say well worn looking, they work so well and have been with me since I was in school so I'm sort of attached. And I can't really get pretty and expensive new scissors just for pictures of my work space, so I guess it's just going to be these guys around some more. Though I guess the vintage silver sewing scissors are rather nice looking....

leftovers

I'm at jury duty today (please don't pick me) so I don't have much to post here except this.
I cut the edges off of all the pattern paintings I did last week but they were still very pretty so I couldn't bring myself to throw them away. I laid them all out and admired them, and then I made them into a little weaving because that seemed like the thing to do.

oh yeah I made this too

I found this photo today of a project I realized I had forgotten to post. My mom brought me a big bag of faux fur when she was in town (she is clearing out her workroom and it is full of treasures!) and I wanted to see if I immediately wanted to make some pillows for the couch. You know, to winter it up a bit. It was super easy, though a word of warning, the fur bits get everywhere when you are cutting. I think I swept five times. In fact I believe I spent more time sweeping than making these. It took me about a half hour to make two. Just a simple envelope back out of cotton. Done and done and dino seems to like this one a lot!

no rest for the busy

Yeah yeah I could make some sort of excuse about more of the same, I'm working too much, deadlines and holidays and all that jam, but a. i don't like excuses and b. it feels pretty great to have my plate this full. Also I'm very much enjoying my newly recovered faux marble desk top. The original contact paper covering lasted over six months before it started to look weary and I think it's great that I get to play a bit with this surface's appearance since I do take a lot of pictures of my desk while i'm working.
